On Tuesday 19th February, Banksia students had a visitor from Mindarie Shire. 3 small bins (with red, yellow and green lids) and a range of ‘rubbish’ items were brought into the classroom by a waste educator. The children were given the opportunity to share their knowledge – which rubbish goes into which bin? They were all eager to participate and were later chosen one by one to select a piece of rubbish and place it in the correct bin. There were smiles and laughter as the children discussed where dirty nappies and doggy-do bags get disposed (for those unsure, it’s definitely the red bin). When asked what other types of rubbish went into the red bin, there were many responses but the favourite suggestion by the children was ‘chicken bones’ and ‘cow bones’. A big thank you to the Waste Educator for the presentation. Hopefully we will see these eager, future environmentalists bringing home the knowledge they learnt in the classroom.
