School Council. Banksia Montessori School Incorporated is a not-for-profit Association that is responsible for the management of Banksia Montessori School. The powers of this Association are to be found in the school’s Rules of Association.
To become a member of the Association a parent would need to enrol their child in the school. Non-parent membership of the Association may be granted by resolution of the school’s Council.
Members of the school’s Council are appointed every calendar year at the Annual General Meeting of the Association. The Council has the power to do all things necessary or convenient to be done for the proper management of the affairs of the Association.
The Council consists of a:
- Chairperson
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- General Member (up to five (5) other persons)
- Business Manager (as an ex-officio non-voting member)
- Principal (as an ex-officio non-voting member)
Council members are appointed by the outgoing Council and assume their roles immediately after the Annual General Meeting.
The Council is responsible for the governance of the school. It:
- Provides the school community with a forum and focus for parent involvement in the school
- Takes cognisance of the educational needs of the school community
- Ensures that cultural and social diversity within the school community is catered for
- Sets the broad direction of the school
- Undertakes strategic planning for the school
- Determines governance policies for the school
- Determines the application of the total financial resources available to the school
- Reports to the school community at the Annual General Meeting on the school’s finances, the school’s Strategic Plan and Council’s operations and plans
- Employs and dismisses the school’s Principal
- Is responsible for the maintenance of school property
- Raises money for school related purposes
- Complies with legislation
- Is accountable for maintaining a satisfactory standard of education and care of students
- Is accountable for the quality of the educational programs of the school
- Is accountable for monitoring and achieving ongoing improvements in student learning
- Is accountable for the use of Public Funding received
- Is accountable for the risk management of the school
The Council meets for the dispatch of business for a minimum of eight (8) meetings per year and three (3) voting Council members constitute a quorum. Minutes are taken at Council meetings and these are checked and signed as correct by the Chairperson.
